KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers were warned to exercise extra
caution when buying water containers as unscrupulous traders could be selling
recycled tubs previously used to store chemicals.
Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist
Datuk Nadzim Johan said consumers should inspect containers thoroughly before
buying them.
“In their desperation, some do not think twice before
buying water containers, especially if they are cheap.
“However, we do not know where these traders get these
containers. We also do not know what they were previously used for and how they
could affect consumers’ health.
“They could have been used for chemical storage. There
might even be some residue left in them.”
He said this after two recent cases of consumers duped into
buying recycled chemical containers from roadside peddlers.
Nadzim advised consumers to check containers carefully so
that they were not cheated, adding the authorities should take action against
those selling such containers.
Yesterday, a Salak Jaya resident said several containers she
intended to buy from a roadside peddler had a chemical-like smell.
The woman, who declined to be identified, said she changed
her mind because of the smell.
“There was also a blackish substance in the
containers,” she said, adding that when she asked the peddler about it, he
told her not to use the containers to store drinking water.
