PPIM ADVOCATES FOR LEFTOVER FOOD MANAGEMENT POLICY TO COMBAT FOOD WASTE AND PROMOTE RETORT TECHNOLOGY – PRESS STATEMENT PPIM – 16/07/2024

Kuala Lumpur – Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) is calling upon the Malaysian government and the corporate sector to collaborate on the formulation of a comprehensive Leftover Food Management Policy. This initiative is aimed at reducing cooked food wastage and encouraging the adoption of retort technology as a sustainable solution.

It is a common practice that leftover food is often discarded and wasted, leading to significant food wastage. PPIM proposes a solution where leftover food can be efficiently packed using retort technology and distributed to those in need. By embracing this approach, we can effectively address food wastage while providing support to individuals and communities facing food insecurity.

In addition to the social and environmental benefits of reducing food wastage, PPIM highlights the economic advantage of adopting a Leftover Food Management Policy. By ensuring that consumers receive the actual quantity of goods they purchase, this initiative can help in stabilizing prices of goods by reducing unnecessary wastage.

To encourage the adoption of this policy, PPIM suggests that the government and corporate entities implement a requirement for hotels and restaurants seeking catering contracts to demonstrate their commitment to the Leftover Food Management Policy. By mandating proof of adherence to this policy as a prerequisite for business engagement, corporations will be motivated to integrate sustainable food practices into their operations.

PPIM believes this proactive step will not only drive the reduction of food waste in the hospitality sector but also encourage businesses to prioritize social responsibility and sustainable food management practices.

We urge all stakeholders, including government bodies, industry representatives, and consumers, to support the development and implementation of a robust Leftover Food Management Policy. By working together towards this common goal, we can create a more sustainable and responsible approach to food consumption that benefits both society and the environment.
