DECISION TO MAINTAIN ELECTRICITY TARIFF BRINGS RELIEF TO DOMESTIC CONSUMERS – BERNAMA – 29/01/2022
02 Feb 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — The government’s decision to maintain the current electricity tariff for domestic consumers in Peninsular Malaysia until Dec 31, 2024, as announced by the Energy Commission on Friday has brought relief to over nine million consumers in the category.

Many quarters, including domestic consumers, believe that the move will ease their burden as they are still impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a tweet yesterday said the government will continue with subsidies of more than RM700 million so that domestic consumers will not be affected.

Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said the government’s decision was appropriate and would have a positive impact on the community as a whole.

it is good because the people are currently facing a hard time. If the tariff is increased, the people will be more affected because surely the costs of some goods and services will also increase. Alhamdulillah, this decision gives a very good sign and hope to all quarters,” he told Bernama when contacted today.

In the meantime, Nadzim also hoped the government would create a channel in the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) to facilitate the people in making direct complaints on any problem they faced.

He said the data obtained from direct complaints was very important to ensure that the welfare of the people is always protected.

We want their complaints to reach the government and JPM itself will sort out the issue, thus enabling the voices of the people to be heard,” said Nadzim who expressed his appreciation to the prime minister for his concern for the people.

Meanwhile, Nasi Lemak Janda Cheras owner Norizan Mohammad Yusof, 58, said she was happy to receive the news about the electricity tariff because it would enable her to run her business as usual.

1 am relieved because I have to use kitchen appliances (at home) to prepare the cooking ingredients. So, this does not affect my daily expenditure as we only do business on a small scale: she said.
